- Empress Matilda was the daughter of Henry I, King of England and granddaughter of William the Conqueror thus a descendant of the House of Normandy, Kings of England. She was married 22 May 1128, to Geffroi Plantagenet at Le Mans Cathedral and was declared heir-presumptive by her father, Henry I, and acknowledged as such by the barons. However, upon Henry I's death in 1135, the throne was seized by Matilda's cousin, Stephen of Blois after which The Anarchy followed. Matilda was de facto ruler for a few months in 1141, but she was never crowned and is rarely listed as a monarch of England. [2]
