    Source is Cooley Family Genealogy, however I have added the "T" middle initial from Michigan census data (1830). Later note: From Memo of Age I have changed initial 'T' to the full middle name Thurman.
    The following is from the "Samuel T Cooley Memorial Report", Michigan Historical Commission, v21, p125 and Michigan Pioneer Collection: Samuel Thurman Cooley was born at Pittsford, Rutland Co, Vermont March 30, 1806 The Noah Cooley family including Samuel Thurman Cooley removed to the State of New York shortly after the conclusion of the War of 1812; about 1815. Samuel along with two brothers, Andrew and Caleb came to Oakland County, Territory of Michigan in 1830. Samuel [settled near his brother Andrew in Franklin Township], then removed to Pittsford, Hillsdale County Michigan in 1835, where he resided until July 14, 1890, at which date he removed to Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan, where he resided with his son William Cooley until his death which occured Jan. 4, 1892. Jonesville is about 17 miles northwest of Pittsford. Samuel was married in 1830 to Miss Electa Woodrull of the state of New York who died April 5 1843 at Pittsford Michigan. He was again united in marriage with Mrs. Lydia Carter in 1844, who died Nov 19 1887. Three sons and one daughter survive him by his first marriage, one son by this marriage dying in infancy. Byron Cooley born Jan 28 1834, Woodrull Cooley, born 1836, died in infancy; Rebecca O. Cooley born March 30 1839; William Cooley born April 10 1841, James W. Cooley born March 12 1843. He leaves no children by his second marriage. He was a consistent Christian and a member of the M.E. church his whole life.
    From BLM records #MI NO S/N Document No. 5242, Accession MIO110_273: Land Office Detroit issued a patent to Samuel T Cooley, State of Michigan, 69.12 acres on 7/10/1832 as follows: E

    (Research):Samuel T Cooley appears in the 1850 and 1854 Michigan censuses, Hillsdale County. Along with his immediate family members there appear Eliza J. Carter, Age 16, born in New York (abt 1834) and Franklin Cooley, Age 25, born in New York (abt 1825). It is probable that Franklin was a brother of Samuel T, son of Noah and Jane. The name Franklin is more likely that the name "Benjamin" which appears in the error prone appendix of Caverly's History of Pittsford.

    1810(est) - [Noah Cooley] family moved to New York State (After the War of 1812 is more lilkely) 1829-30 - Samuel T [and brother Andrew S] left Lockport NY for Pontiac/Southfield MI - came to Detroit and settled in Pontiac
    1831 - [Samuel T] wed to Electa Woodruff in Pontiac MI1833 - 1835 [The Samuel T Cooley family] left Southfield, MI and moved to Pittsford/Jonesville, MI. Five children grew up in a "log cabin in the woods". 1843 - Electa died when James Watson was only three weeks old.
    1844 - [Samuel T] married Lydia Carter1892 - [Samuel T Cooley] died in home of son, William, in Jonesville MI

    Byron Cooley, telegraph operator, freight and United States Express agent, at Napoleon, was born in Oakland county, Mich., Jan. 28, 1834, the son of Samuel L. and Electa Cooley, nee Woodruff. His father's occupation was always farming, at which he is still engaged, in Hillsdale county, Mich.; his mother died in 1846, when Byron was only a small boy, and his father afterward was married to Lydia Carter. The subject of this sketch received his education in the common schools of Hillsdale county, and remained with his father on the farm until 23 years old, when he chose the occupation of railroading, and commenced as teamster on the MS&NIRR [Morenci Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad], and now the LS&MSRR [Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad] and continued to work, first at one thing and then another, until now he has charge of the present office, having continued in the employ of said road from the first until the present. He was married in 1860 to Sarah E. Collins, who was born in New York. Their family consists of 4 children--George, Jennie, Charles and Grace. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity at Hillsdale, Lodge No. 83.
    Note: At the time of the 1910 U.S. census, he was living in the household of his son-in-law, Charles O. Machan, who married his daughter Grace.
