It is perplexing that both William Sr and Emily disappear after the 1850 Garnavillo Iowa census when they were residing in Emily's father's household, Andrew S. Cooley. In the 1860 census William and Emily's daughter is still residing with the Andrew S. Cooley household, the census noting that she is attending school. Could both William and Emily both met their demise at the same time? There is absolutely no information about them beyond 1850 (online in late 2020). William's younger sister, Ruth, married Emily's elder brother, Noah

(Research):A William R Gladden appears in the West (Idaho, Oregon, Washington) with a wife Ida F. ___ but there is nothing to indicate he is "our" William Gladden. Also he is found in this Civil War Kansas entry: Military Service: Gladden, William R; Private, Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Companies B & G, enlst 28 May 1861; date mustr 3 Jun 1861; transferred from Co B to Co G, 1 Jul 1861; service thru 16 Jun 1864 in 1st.

William married Emily E. Cooley on 9 Dec 1858 in Clayton County, Iowa. Emily (daughter of Andrew Sutherland Cooley and Salome Warren) was born about May 1840 in Garnavillo Twp, Clayton Co, Iowa Territory; died before 1870. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

She was listed in the family of Andrew Sutherland Cooley in 1870 but her father (William) and mother (Emily C. Cooley) are not there. She "att school".
