    Notes:

Summary of Carolyn McCune's research on Tarry McCuneA. On October 31, 1811, Charles may have arrived in the Port of Philadelphia aboard the "Harmony", a ship sailing from Londonderry, as there was a Charles McCoun who was listed as being on that ship. The Captain's name was Holkirk. The voyage took 70 days. B. In 1823-24, Charles and his family moved to Morgan County, Ohio where they may have settled near Belle Valley. They were members of St. Michael's Catholic Church built in 1841 at the site of St. Michael's Cemetery until 1900 when it was moved to Berne, Ohio about one mile away. C. From the "History of Noble County, Ohio" (L.H. Watkins and Co., 1887) 'Charles McCune and John Reed were both Irishmen and early settlers...St. Michael's Roman Catholic church was established in 1841. The building, a brick structure, was erected in that year through the efforts of Michael Archer and under the direction of Rev. Father Murphy. Michael Archer and his brothers, Simon and Nathan, with their families, constituted the original membership. Other early members were the Doyles, McCunes, Cullens, Harknesses and others. Prior to 1841 the settlement had been visited by Fathers Reed, McCallion and Finley. D. According to a deed provided by Morgan County Ohio Recorder of Deeds: James Reed sold land for $170 to Tarrance McCune on 1 April 1824, "it being one hundred acres...all that part or parcel...lying and being on west side of Duck Creek of the northeast quarter of Section 29, Township 7, Range 9" of the lands sold at Zanesville by the act of Congress. The deed was signed on 21 April 1824 by James Reed and Rachel Reed. Attest David NcGary and Peter Fogle. E. According to www.glorecords.blm.gov on internet, James Reed had been original purchaser of land in and around Belle Valley, including 80 acres in Twp 7N, Range 9W, Section 29 which is the same section where William McCune and Joseph McCune had their land when the 1876 map of Noble Township, Noble County was printed. F. According to the "Morgan Co, Ohio Common Pleas Minute Book E" Tarrance was naturalized in Morgan County, Ohio under the Act of 1828. It indicates that he was a native of Ireland and had proved that he had resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States, before the 18th day of June 1812.
Note: The U.S. Congress declared war on England 19 Jun 1812G. According to the "Morgan Co, Ohio Grantee Index A-Z 1795-1855" (FHL Microfilm 0911104) in Book L, p147, Charles McCune was Grantee, John Reed was Grantor of 20 acres of land at $400, Section 29, Township 7, Range 9. H. According to the "Deed Transfers of Noble County 1800-1899" in Vol 9 p533, David Jennings was Grantee and Charles McCune was Grantor of 10 acres of land, Section 29, Township 7, Range 9. I. According to the "Deed Transfers of Noble County 1800-1899" in Vol 12 p54, Charles McCune was Grantee and Jas. Dudley was Grantor of a lease, Section 29, Township 7, Range 9. J. On June 26, 1861, Wm Barnhouse, George Barnhouse, Wm McCune, Joseph McCune, and Rosannah Barnhouse asked the probate judge to appoint John Geddes to be the administrator of the estate of Tarry McCune (Box 70, Case 701). The heirs were William McCune, Joseph McCune, and Roseanne Barnhouse. K. On June 26, 1861, Sebria McCune declined "taking out letters of administration on the estate of Tarry McCune (my deceased husband)" this was attested by Wm Barnhouse and George Barnhouse and ..... Geddis was crossed out. L. On July 6, 1861, a notice was published in the "Noble County Republican" which said: "Charles McCune's Estate Notice is hereby given that the subscriber has been appointed and qualified as Administrator on the estate of Charles McCune......Noble County, deceased. Dated at Caldwell this 29th day of June, 1861. John Gaddis, administrator. July 6, 1861"
Many thanks to Carolyn McCune, cmccune@primary.net, for this wonderfully extensive research on the McCunes in America. - Daniel B Cooley

(Research):From McCune Family in America "The name McCune is thought to be of Scottish origin. It is the Anglicized version of the Gaelic personal name of Eogann, or Eugene as we know it. Eugene is derived from the Latin name Eugenius and it was borne by a third century bishop and martyr. Variant spellings are McCowan, McCone, McGeown, McGuone, McCown and Keown. The two distinct groups in which Scottish surnames fall are those of Gaelic origin and those of English origin. The Gaelic language came to Scotland from Ireland around the fifth centruy. Surnames of Gaelic orgin came from the northern and western area of Scotland. Because of famine and discrimination, Scotsmen were forced to leave their land and spread out around the world. Consequently, many Scottish surnames exist throughout the English speaking world. The most common Gaelic origin surname is patronymic (descending from the father) and it begins with the prefix of 'Mac', meaning 'son of'. Scottish surnames that are English in origin often take the same form as its counterpart found in England. Many of the Scottish surnames found in the northeast, the central lowlands, and the border county in southern Scotland are derived from habitation names. However, it has been shown that some names that were always thought to be typically Scottish such as Lindsay or Hamilton, were actually taken from places in England, The names were brought to Scotland by the Normans during the Middle Ages." If Charles Tarrance McCune's name is Irish then it is a variant of MacKeown which is from "Eoin", Irish for "John". So, MacEoin is "Son of John". It is one of the top 50 names in East Ulster

  1. 12.  John D. Barnhouse Descendancy chart to this point (4.Rose2, 1.Charles1) was born on 26 Apr 1844 in Morgan County, Ohio; died on 6 Apr 1902 in Hartford, Putnam Co, Missouri; was buried about Apr 1902 in McCune Cemetery, Putnam Co, Missouri.

    Notes:

In the 11 Mar 1891 issue of Putnam County News the following under the heading "Talks With Old Soldiers; Various Paragraphs Pertaining to War Experiences and Memories": John Barnhouse, of Elm township, who served in Co. I, 62d Ohio Infantry throughout the war, writes us as follows: "I would like to say a word in regard to the new organization called "Comrades of the Battlefield," to be composed of veterans who served three months under fire. I cannot see how the formation of such an organization could divide the Grand Army of the Republic, for hard service did not disorganize our army, nor did it split when part were ordered to undergo more service than others. I believe in rewarding according to amount of service done. It was not a very healthy position to stand under fire. I would have just as soon seen service in Columbus, Ohio, or Chicago, Ills., guarding prisoners, or served on detached duty out of danger, for those positions were sought for and secured by special favor. Now if the veterans who had to take their places in the ranks, and face the music of whistling rifle balls, shrieking cannon shot and bursting shells, could be specially rewarded. I believe it is a good plan to form a combination that will aid them in securing their rights. An honorable discharge is good, and an "under fire" record won't hurt it."
In the 9 Apr 1902 issue of Putnam County News: "After two or three years of suffering with cancer of the face, death finally came to the relief of John Barnhouse, at his home near Hartford last Sunday at about noon. He had been a resident of Putnam County since shortly after the close of the civil war, coming here from Ohio, and has since been a respected and highly esteemed citizen of this county. He served as a soldier in an Ohio regiment. A wife, but no children, survives him. The funeral services were held Monday under the auspices of the Masonic order and the interment took place at the McCune graveyard. For months past he had been in a very feeble condition , and on several occasions it was thought he was dying. To one who had suffered so much, death must have been a welcome messenger."
In Putnam County, Missouri Estate Records: Estate of John Barnhouse, dec'd: Died 6 Apr 1902; Filed 12 Apr 1902; # 1444; Widow Nancy Barnhouse only heir listed.
In Civil War Veteran Census of 1890: Putnam Co, Missouri, Elm Twnshp, SC 5, ED 258, House 257, Family 257: John Barnhouse, Private in Co P of 62 Ohio INF, 3 Feb 1864-7 Dec 1865 (1y10m4d); Address was Hartford; Disability: Gunshot wound in foot and blood poisoning.

John married Nancy J. Shipley-Dwyer on 2 Oct 1884 in Hartford, Putnam Co, Missouri. Nancy was born about Oct 1853 in Indiana; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Michael Barnhouse Descendancy chart to this point (4.Rose2, 1.Charles1) was born about 1846 in Morgan County, Ohio; died on 12 Aug 1851 in Noble County, Ohio; was buried about Aug 1851 in Racey Cemetery, Noble Twp, Noble Co, Ohio.

  3. 14.  Ira Morgan BarnhouseIra Morgan Barnhouse Descendancy chart to this point (4.Rose2, 1.Charles1) was born on 14 Aug 1848 in Sharon, Morgan Co, Ohio; died on 4 Apr 1914 in Kansas City, Jackson Co, Missouri; was buried on 7 Apr 1914 in Akron Cemetery, Washington Co, Colorado.

    Notes:

Ira Morgan Barnhouse was born 14 Aug 1848 at Sharon, Noble County, Ohio. His youth was spent on a farm at the place of his birth. He enlisted in Co. B, 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry* when but 15 years of age and served in the Union Army under Gen. Sherman on his triumphal [and unnecessarily destructive] "March to the Sea" through Georgia from Atlanta to Savannah then north through the Carolinas to Washington DC. He was honorably discharged at Louisville Kentucky July 20, 1865. He taught school in Ohio and Missouri from 1867 to 1873. He was married 3 Aug 1875 to Mary Francis Albin at Laurelville, Hocking County, Ohio to which union three children were born: Perl Travisd, Edna Maude, and Rose Ann Elizabeth. He engaged in various mercantile and industrial pursuits removing to Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado in turn. He homesteaded February 1887 near Abbott, Washington County, Colorado. He was a Mason, having taken the degrees in Caldwell, Missouri at the age of 21. He was a Presbyterian by faith, having united with that church in 1876. His love of home and family gave him zeal and persistence in the field of human endeavor in their behalf. His wonderful energy but slight physical strength culminated in his enforced retirement from the more arduous labor of farm life in 1904 at which time he came to Akron, Colo. His confidence in its future was manifested in his real estate promotions at a time when many faltered. A nearly fatal accident** on 7 Nov 1907 from which he recovered through his power of will alone, left an imperfect cicatrice*** on his cheek. He was elected County Judge and began service in 1908. The facial problem he received in his accident, however, began to trouble him in 1911. It developed into cancer a year later and he was forced to resign his judgeship in 1912. The unequal struggle ended in his death at the Hahnemann Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., at four o'clock on the fourth day of April, 1914.

*Although the Ohio 66th participated in the Battle of Antietam (17 Sep 1862), I.M. Barnhouse enlisted too late to be a part of it. The battle (also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, particularly in the South), was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, at Antietam Creek. It was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil and was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties on both sides.
**The nature of this accident is not known. The cause of death as written on his death certificate was "Uremic poison, contributory, Cancer face". Apparently it was not a service-related cause of death.
***Cicatrice or Cicatrix, n. pl. Cicatrices (Med); 'si-k&-"triks, &-'kA-triks. The pellicle that forms over a wound or breach of continuity of the skin that completes the process of healing and subsequently contracts and becomes white forming a scar.

(Research):Census data have been a great source of confusion for Ira Morgan Barnhouse. In three US censuses in the state of Ohio:

o 1850 census for Morgan County, Noble Twp
George Barnhouse and Rose Ann family Hiram, age 2 (this is an error of great consequence; this is really Ira M)
o 1860 census for Noble County, Ohio
    George Burnhouse and Rozann family
    Morgan, age 10
o 1870 census for Noble County, Ohio
George Barnhouse and Rose A. family
    Ira M. age 22
Considered as a whole, two of these three census data items are consistent with a birthdate in 1848 leading to the conclusion there was no separate child named Hiram in this family. As for 1860, descendants of Ira Morgan Barnhouse have learned that Ira was known as "Morgan" in his early years. My grandfather, Nelson Sears, wrote down that name in his journal where he had Morgan's birthdate as 14 Aug 1848.

(Medical):I hereby certify that I attended deceased from 12/26/1913 to 4/4/1914 that I last saw him alive on 4/4/1914 and that death occurred on the date stated above at 4 P.M. (signed) Dr O.A. Johnson MD, April 4, 1914, 1320 Main St, Kansas City, Missouri

Ira married Mary Francis Albin on 4 Aug 1875 in Laurelville, Hocking Co, Ohio. Mary (daughter of William Slater Albin and Elizabeth Ann Tribby) was born on 20 Oct 1854 in Laurelville, Hocking Co, Ohio; died on 8 Jan 1924 in Akron, Washington Co, Colorado; was buried on 10 Jan 1924 in Akron Cemetery, Washington Co, Colorado. Notes:

Obituary from the Unionville Republican 14 June 1933: Thomas Benton Barnhouse, son of George and Roseann Barnhouse, was born in Noble County, Ohio, February 22, 1857, and departed this life at the family home, near Hartford, Mo., Monday, June 12, 1933, at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 20 days. He was united in marriage with Hannah Woolever in February, 1881. Their union was blessed with three children, one preceding the parents in death. The living are: Mrs. Grace Woodard, of Unionville, and Claud B., of Hartford. Mr. and Mrs. Barnhouse came to Putnam County, Missouri, in the year of 1882, settling on a farm in the community of Hartford. Residing in this locality for the past fifty-one years, they endeared themselves to the people around them until they will be sadly missed, being neighbors of sterling, honest and congenial kind, and helpful to everyone about them. The wife and mother preceded him in death in the year of 1922.
