  1. 1.  Thomas Blisse was born about 1580-1590 in South West England; died before Feb 1650/51 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.

    Notes:

There is substantial evidence that Thomas Bliss Sr was born in Gloucestershire, South West England and was married twice: firstly to Margaret Snowe and secondly to Margaret Hulings (Hulins, Hulinge). There are entries for these names in the records of the St Nicholas Church of Gloucestershire a church that was not affiliated with the Church of England. Due to religious persecution Thomas (hereafter Thomas Bliss Sr) and his younger brother George and their families embarked about 1635 at Plymouth England for the New World. Upon their arrival at Boston Thomas Sr resided temporarily at Braintree MBC (Massachusetts Bay Colony) whence he removed to Hartford Plantation[*] before 1639. George settled first in the MBC town of Lynn in 1637, then Sandwich in 1638, and finally Newport. Both Thomas Blisse Sr and Thomas Blisse Jr had house-lots and divisions of land in Hartford as early as 1640. The senior died in Hartford leaving nine children and his widow Margaret. Apparently a woman of resolute independent character, she removed with the younger part of her family to Springfield. - History of Norwich. The Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford lists Thomas Bliss (Sr) as a founder of Hartford settling there before February 1640. Other lists of Hartford founders also list Thomas Jr along with his father. [*]The first English settlers arrived in 1635. Pastor Thomas Hooker and Governor John Haynes led 100 settlers with 130 head of cattle in a trek from Newtown (now Cambridge, Massachusetts) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and started their settlement just north of a Dutch fort (set up as early as 1623; abandoned 1654). The settlement was originally called Newtown, but was changed to Hartford in 1637 to honor the English town of Hertford. - Wikipedia

  1. 2.  Ann Blisse Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was christened about 1617 in Gloucestershire, England; died on 20 Nov 1685 in Saybrook, New London Co, Connecticut Colony.

Ann married Robert Chapman on 29 Apr 1642 in Saybrook, New London Co, Connecticut Colony. Robert was born before 1617 in Gloucestershire, England; died on 13 Oct 1687 in Saybrook, New London Co, Connecticut Colony. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Thomas Blisse Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was christened on 23 Jan 1617/18 in Gloucestershire, England; died on 15 Apr 1688 in Norwich, New London Co, Connecticut Colony.

    Notes:

Thomas Bliss, Senior and Junior, had house-lots and divisions of land in Hartford Plantation as early as 1640. The senior died in Hartford, leaving nine children, and his widow, Margaret, apparently a woman of resolute, independent character, removed with the younger part of the family to Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Thomas Bliss, Junior, is afterwards found at Saybrook, Connecticut Colony where his marriage and the births of six children are recorded. The list is repeated with some variation of date and the addition of two more children, at Norwich, Connecticut Colony. The wife's family name is not given in either place. "Thomas and Elizabeth Bliss were married the latter end of October, 1644." The allotments of Thomas Bliss in Saybrook were eastward of the river in what is now Lyme, Conn. His house-lot of thirty acres lay between John Ompsted (Olmstead) on the north, and John Lay south. He sold it 23 Jul 1662 to John Comstock. His house-lot in Norwich was also near to that of John Olmstead extending originally at the north-west to the pent highway. That part where the house stands has never been alienated. Seven generations have dwelt on the same spot and the house is supposed not to have been entirely rebuilt since it was erected by the first proprietor. Thomas Bliss died 15 Apr 1688. His will, executed two days before his death, was proved at New London, before Edward Palmes, June 13, and allowed by Sir Edmund Andross at Boston ; this being the period when that delegated despot arrogated to himself supreme authority over the courts of New England. The will recognizes wife Elizabeth, son Samuel, and his daughters. His oldest son, Thomas, had died without issue 29 Jan 1681. Ehzabeth, the relict, died 28 Feb 1699/1700.

Thomas married Elizabeth Birchard on 30 Oct 1644 in Saybrook, Fairfield Co, Connecticut Colony. Elizabeth was born about 1622 in England; died on 28 Feb 1699/00 in Norwich, New London Co, Connecticut Colony. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  3. 4.  Sarah Blisse Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was christened on 23 Apr 1620 in Gloucestershire, England; and died.

    Notes:

Presumably died young since a second Sarah was born later to Thomas and Margaret Hulins.

  4. 5.  Nathaniel Bliss Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born est 1622 in Gloucestershire, England; was buried on 18 Nov 1654 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

    Notes:

I have downgraded Nathaniel's birth date to an estimation because it is not clear he or his father were members of the Church of England and the current Bliss descendant sources of baptism data come from Gloucestershire Anglican Parish Registers.

NATHANIEL BLISS of Springfield Massachusetts Bay Colony, (son of Thomas Blisse Sr and Margaret Hulings or Hulins) was born in England, came to America with his father in 1635, and removed to Springfield with his mother in 1643, about seven years after that place was purchased from the Indians by William Pynchon. Three years later, when they were well settled, he married Katharine, daughter of Deacon Samuel Chapin, of Springfield 20 Nov 1646, a few days before his sister Mary was married to Joseph Parsons. In Springfield his home lot was ten rods wide and was the second below the present William Street. He died 18 Nov 1654. Widow Bliss married Thomas Gilbert 31 Jul 1655. Nathaniel d..Springfield. Mass., 18 Nov. 1654, his mother d. there 28 Aug. 1684, thus accounting for Nathaniel not being mentioned in her will.

  5. 6.  Mary Blisse Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born est 1626 in Gloucestershire, England; died on 29 Jan 1711/12 in Northampton, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

After several years in Springfield, the Joseph Parsons family, which now included three children, moved to Northampton, a brand new settlement some 20 miles up the Connecticut River. Joseph Parsons soon became one of Northampton's leading citizens. A successful merchant, he served as a selectman and on the committee to build the first meetinghouse. Parsons also owned the first tavern in town. Soon after arriving in Northampton, Mary Parsons gave birth to a son, the first English child born in the town. That same month, neighbor Sarah Bridgman had a baby boy. When he died two weeks later, she claimed it was the result of Mary's witchcraft. Rumors began to swirl about the town. Joseph Parsons decided to go on the offensive. He charged James Bridgman with slander for spreading rumors about Mary Parsons's alleged witchcraft. The case was heard at the Magistrates' Court in Cambridge in October 1656; 33 depositions were given. Almost half of Northampton's 32 households sent a witness; a few others came from Springfield. On January 5, 1675, the county magistrates summoned Mary to appear before them. Women searched her body for "witch's teats," unexplained (to seventeenth-century eyes) protrusions where "imps" were said to suck. The record is silent as to what they did or did not find, but in March the Court of Assistants in Boston sent Mary Parsons to prison to await trial. The records from this trial do not survive, but we know that on May 13, 1675, a jury found her not guilty.

Mary married Joseph Parsons on 26 Nov 1646 in Hartford County, Connecticut Colony. Joseph was christened on 25 Jun 1620 in England; died on 9 Oct 1683 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 7.  Lawrence Blisse Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born est 1628 in South West England; died about 1676 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Lawrence married Lydia Wright on 25 Oct 1654 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Lydia (daughter of Living and Living) was born about 1633 in Gloucestershire, England; died on 13 Feb 1688/89 in Dominion of New England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  7. 8.  Hannah Blisse Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born est 1633 in Gloucestershire, England; died on 25 Jan 1660/61 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

    Notes:

That Hannah was born in England rests entirely on her estimated birth year of 1633. Other lists of children state a birth year of 1639 hence she would have been born in New England.
Hannah was never married. The Legacy Family Tree program puts "Unkown" in the name field if one mistakenly brings up the "Add" dialog box. There's no way to reverse this process. Thus, "Unkown" as the husband of Hannah Bliss is wrong. There was no husband. The field should be blank.

Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 9.  John Blisse Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born about 1635 in Gloucestershire, England; died on 20 Sep 1702 in Springfield, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

That John was born in England rests entirely on his estimated birth year of 1635. Other lists of children state a birth year of 1640 hence he would have been born in New England.
John Bliss, the youngest of Widow Margaret's children [that came with her to Springfield], married Patience Burt, daughter of Henry and Eulalia Burt, October 7, 1667. The town granted him several pieces of land before he was married, as did also Northampton where his sister, Mary Parsons, resided. His homelot in [Northampton] was next north of his brother-in-law's, Joseph Parsons, and extended from the present Market Street on the west, to Bridge Street on the east, or in front of the cemetery. He resided in that town several years after marriage, but returned to Springfield and resided in that part of the town now within the limits of Longmeadow. He died November 4, 1702, and his widow October 2, 1732.

John married Patience Burt on 7 Oct 1667 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Patience was born on 18 Aug 1645 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony; was christened on 18 Aug 1645 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  9. 10.  Sarah Bliss Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born est 1639 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony; died on 27 Sep 1705 in Roxbury, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts.

Sarah married John Scott on 20 Jul 1659 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. John died on 2 Jan 1689/90 in Springfield, Dominion of New England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  10. 11.  Hester Bliss Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born est 1640 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony; died on 12 Jun 1683 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

    Notes:

From the Bliss Genealogy it appears that a Hester Bliss, who arrived in Boston after the Thomas Bliss Sr family was established in Hartford (1640), was married to an Edward Foster, himself a servant of John Pynchon. The question arises: was the Hester Bliss of Boston the same Hester Bliss, daughter of Thomas Sr? There is also the question of her twin sister Elizabeth. Why isn't Elizabeth mentioned in conjunction with Hester?
It appears likely that (1) Hester of Boston is probably not the Hester of Hartford. If she is eliminated as a child of Thomas Bliss Sr. the question of her twin sister still remains. Another possibility, (2) Hester of Hartford did not marry Edward Foster.
I will keep Edward Foster as husband because of the strong John Pynchon link to Springfield and that Hester died in Springfield.
[Dec. 26, 1661, Edward Foster, a servant of John Pynchon, Esq., a merchant in Springfield, Mass., was m. to "Hester Bliss", supposed by some to have been a member of this family, came to this country after the death of Thomas Bliss, sen. It appears by the "account book" kept by John Pynchon, Esq...[he] agreed with Hester at Boston, to serve bim a year for four pounds sterling, and that she commenced her service with him Nov. 1, 1658. And Mr. P. paid on her account, at Boston, two pounds to the "pinnace master;" which indicates that she had then lately arrived from England, and that that sum was the balance due for her passage. For this reason Judge Morris excluded her name from the list of the children in the {Thomas Bliss Sr family].
The birthdates and places of the twins Hester and Elizabeth Bliss are not clear. I have stated they were born in Hartford Plantation in 1640 because there is evidence Thomas Bliss Sr was in Hartford "as early as 1640". If they were born before 1640 Glouscestershire seems likely or aboard ship which seems less likelly.

Hester married Edward Foster on 26 Dec 1661 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Edward died on 22 Feb 1719/20 in Springfield, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  11. 12.  Elizabeth Bliss Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born est 1640 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony; died before 1683 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

    Notes:

The birthdates and places of the twins Hester and Elizabeth Bliss are not clear. I have stated they were born in Hartford Plantation in 1640 because there is evidence Thomas Bliss Sr was in Hartford "as early as 1640". If they were born before 1640 Glouscestershire seems likely or aboard ship which seems less likely.
There is no death record for Elizabeth. She was indirectly mentioned in the 1683 will of her mother, Widow Margaret Bliss, who left "... to my grandson Nathaneel Morgan three pounds when he comes to the age of twenty years".

Elizabeth married Miles Morgan on 15 Feb 1669/70 in Springfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Miles was born about 1615 in England; died on 28 May 1699 in Springfield, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  12. 13.  Samuel Bliss Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born about 1642 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony; died on 23 Mar 1719/20 in Springfield, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts.

Note: According to these dates he was 101 years old at his death. Mortimer Cooley in the Cooley Genealogy noted that Samuel Bliss was aged 102 at his death (101 years, 5 months).
From Boston Post-Boy, Boston, Massachusetts dated 17 Jul 1749. "On the 19th past [19 June 1749] died at Springfield, Mr. Samuel Bliss, in the 102d Year of his age: He was born in that Town, Sept 7, 1647; and has left alive 6 Children, 38 grandchildren, 114 Great-Grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren".

By my count four childern were definitely alive after 19 Jun 1749: Nathaniel 2nd, Thomas, John, and Ebenezer. Sarah's death date is unknown so if after 1749 she would be the 5th child alive.
