  1. 1.  Katherine Chapin was christened about 1626 in Berry Pomeroy, Devonshire, South West England; died on 4 Feb 1711/12 in Springfield, Hampshire Co, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

    Widow Katharine Bliss, about eight months after her husband's death, m(2) 31 Jul 1655 Thomas Gilbert; by him she had four more children. When Gilbert died 5 Jun 1662 she soon m(3) Samuel Marshfield 28 Dec 1664; by him she had four children making twelve in all. For most widows and widowers not much time was lost in mourning or widowhood*. For men with small children it was of utmost importance to bring a new mother into the family. But times were hard for a widow with little children too and men at this time outnumbered the women in the colonies so there was no lack of suitors for single women. *An exception to this was Nathaniel's own mother, Margaret Hulings, who didn't re-marry after her husband, Thomas Bliss Sr's death in 1650. She removed to Springfield in 1651 and quite admirably raised her young children of 8, 10 (twins), 12, 15, and 17. By this time the oldest three, Nathaniel, Mary, and Lawrence hand struck out on their own.

    Berry Pomeroy is a village, civil parish and former manor in the former hundred of Haytor, today within South Hams district of Devon, England, about two miles east of Totnes. It was the caput (a Latin word meaning literally "head" and by metonymy "top") of a large feudal barony whose holder is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ralph de Pomeroy, who held in total within Devon 54 manors, three smaller parcels of land and six houses in Exeter, capital of Devon. It was one of only eight feudal baronies in Devon. The family retained the barony until 1547. It comprised almost 32 knight's fees in the Cartae Baronum of 1166. "On the 19th past [19 June 1749] died at Springfield, Mr. Samuel Bliss, in the 102d Year of his age: He was born in that Town, Sept 7, 1647; and has left alive 6 Children, 38 grandchildren, 114 Great-Grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren".

    Benjamin4 Cooley was born 5 Nov 1701, probably in the long meddowe precinct of Springfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He was twice married, first to Elisabeth Charles, second to Mary Needham.
    In Mass Vital Records microfilmed by LDS Church there is an entry: #9-Greenwich p36 "Mary daughter of Benjn Cooley by Mary his wife was born Dec 24, 1768". This is highly unlikely since there was already a Mary Cooley b. 1750, d. 1769. While the first Mary died young in 1769 and sometimes families, who lost a child renamed a later child the same name, there is overlap here.

    Azeriah, s. Rebekah Dicks, Mar. 7 1731. Note that a father is not mentioned so it is possible that a Cooley other than Azariah could have been a father. However, for lack of information, I have assigned Azariah Sr as the father of Azariah Jr. as did the Cooley Genealogy.

    (Research):The name Azariah or the slightly expanded but essentially the same name Azariahu is among the most popular in the Bible. It means "Yahweh has helped" in Hebrew where it was the name of the Hebrew God represented in Hebrew by the tetragrammaton ("four letters") Yod Heh Vav Heh.
