There is an error on the Andrew Sutherland gravestone (formerly a stepstone) in his age at death. It reads 52 years, 5 months, 25 days but should be 59 years, 5 months, 24 days. See research analysis.

(Research):Jane's death is even more mysterious than Noah's because the last record about her I have been able to find is the 1840 U.S. Census, Michigan, Lenawee, Seneca. There is an 1845 Michigan state census but the summary on Ancestry.com lists only head of household, namely, Noah Cooley, MI, Lenawee, Seneca.
On p46 of John William Sutherland and Allied Families by Millie A. Owings we have "Jane [Sutherland](3) (Peter(2), John William(1)] was the first daughter of Peter and Amy [Sutherland] and was born 24 Aug 1787 at Nine Partners, Dutchess county, New York and died 4 July 1854. A footnote in the JW Sutherland genealogy states that "One source says that Jane died in Lockport, Niagara county, New York. Another surce says she died in Seneca township, Lenawee County, Michigan where her children lived. We were unable to find a cemetery record for her either place.
This paragraph is reproduced from Noah Cooley's research notes.: Noah Cooley, son of Col Benjamin, married Jane daughter of Peter Sutherland, January 24, 1804, and located on the west side of Otter Creek, upon land now owned by Ransom Burdett. The house he occupied, built by him, stood on the east side of the old road leading from the residence of Tilly Walker to that of Peter Rice--now R. Burdett's. The cellar of the house can still be seen in the pasture about thirty rods west of the railroad. Mr. Cooley resided there a few years, and then removed to the western country where he died, Jan 11, 1856. Mrs. Cooley died July 4, 1854. [These death dates are wrong; they come from p320 in Caverly's The History of Pittsford which was also wrong about Noah and Jane's children. Mortimer Cooley just copied these erroneous data to his Cooley Genealogy p492 and p547-8].
Amazingly, in the 1850 U.S. Census Noah (aged 68) turns up back in Pittsford VT living with his brother Azariah (70) and his wife Lydia. Alas, Jane is not with him. In 2008 I went to Michigna to investigate a conjecture that she died in Lenawee or Hillsdale counties but turned up nothing in the south-central area (see Owings' footnote above).

From the Owings book: Benjamin Cooley[4] (Andrew[3] Peter[2] John william[1]) was born 18 June 1810 in Pittsford, Vermont and died Thursday 31 January 1867 in Ray township, Macomb county, Michigan. In his brother (Andrew Sutherland Jr) describes him as being not too tall, but built rather compactly, and was a faithful and affectionate brother. He had a deep concern for all his brothers and sisters. He was scholarly, learning easily. He was very apt at learning languages, and was a beautiful singer. He first attended the Academy at Lewiston, then the Seminary at Lima, New York. He studied medicine with Dr. Drill of Lewiston, and took lectures at Herkimer county, then practiced awhile in Niagara county. To get practice in surgery he went among the Navy Islanders during the Navy Island war*, but he escaped capture and cane back to Niagara Falls. Afterwards he went to Macomb county, Michigan had settled in the town of Ray near Romeo. Here he practiced medicine and raised a family.
*Navy Island is a small island in the Niagara River in the province of Ontario, managed by Parks Canada as a National Historic Site of Canada. It is located about 4.5 km upstream from Horseshoe Falls, and has an area of roughly 1.2 km2. It was designated a national historic site in 1921. Carroll[4] (Andrew[3] Peter[2] John william[1]) was the first of the children of Andrew and Naomi to be born in New York state. He was born 1 March 1814, a ruddy healthy boy until about the age of 14 or 15 when according to his brother Andrew Jr he caught a severe cold while helping his father and Benjamin get out some timber at New Fane [Newfane]. From that time on he suffered from asthma. In spite of this he was a fine singer. He went to Canada and taught school for awhile when still quite young, and then when a vacancy occured on the religious circuit, he took the place and continued for several years. He preached at Lockport for almost a year, at the close of which he married Elizabeth Johnson of Canada, and joined the Genesee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was stationed at Black Rock and Tonowanda, then at Knowlesville where he preached nearly all of one day. He was a very popular preacher and was remembered very affectionately by his associates and beloved by all who knew him. He was taken sick and died of bronchial pneumonia at the age of 29, Jan 1843. His widow later married William Wirt near Knowlesville and later settled in Albion. Carroll and Elizabeth had two children; one, a daughter, Mrs. Alice Sutherland Bangs, lived in California.

Naomi Cooley's father, Col. Benjamin Cooley, died in Pittsford, Vermont 27 Feb 1810. Fletcher and Naomi returned to Pittsford early in 1816 to settle her father's estate and it was while they were there that Fletcher was born. Thus, the apparent anomaly of having Fletcher's younger brother, Carroll, and the rest of his elder siblings born in Cambria, New York while he was born in Vermont.
In the Cooley Genealogy p493-4 "m. Mary, dau George Brink of Lyons NY. He was a Methodist minister at Geneva, Lyons, and elsewhere in NY; later became an Episcopalian clergyman".
Death Notice; the New York Times, Wednesday, September 7, 1888, Page 3 SUTHERLAND.--Fletcher Sutherland, the father of the Seven Sutherland Sisters, died at his country home near Lockport, New York, yesterday of paralysis. He was 73 years of age. He was a prominent Methodist minister at one time, but left the pulpit as soon as his daughters took to the stage.
Fletcher4 [Andrew3, Peter2, John William1] was the fifth child of Andrew and Naomi and was born 1 March 1816 in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont where his parents were settling the estate of Naomi's father, Col. Benjamin Cooley, returning to Niagara county, NY in the fall of 1816. Fletcher died 6 September 1888 in Niagara county. Andrew Jr says of his brother, "Fletcher had more executive ability than any of us. He had also selfish tendencies that estranged him. He was not careful of the rights of the family, and as a result of those selfish tendencies was left to himself by other members of the family." Fletcher attended school at Warren's Corners which was near their farm and eventually was sent to the Genesee Wesleyan school at Lima, New York where he studied for the ministry. It was while he was serving as minister at Lyons, New York in 1844 that he met amd married Mary Brink. She was the daughter of George Brink who was considered a well-to-do farmer. Mary had been taking advanced courses in music at Lima Seminary when they met. Fletcher served as minister of Methodist churches at Genesee and Caledonia as well as at Lyons. According to a faded news paper clipping he delivered a very learned "Eulogy on Music" to an enthusiastic audience at Caledonia. Their first child was Sarah Naomi who was born at Lyons in 1844. Fletcher had joined the Masons at a time when the Methodists were very much opposed to Masonry, and Fletcher was asked to resign and leave the church at Lyons. He and Mary went back to Cambria and lived in the old log cabin his father had built so many years before. Between the years 1839 and 1847 Andrew's widow, Naomi, and her other children had all sold their shares of Andrew Sr's farm to Fletcher. It was here in this old cabin that at least three of Fletcher's children were born. According to the Cooley genealogy Sarah Naomi was born in 1844; Mary Fletcher b. 1846 and d. 1850; Victoria b. 1848 d. 1902; Isabella Cooley b. 1850; Charles Carroll b.1854; Naomi b. 1856 d. 1893; Dora b. 1858; Mary b.1860. It was not until 1867 that Fletcher built a modest frame house for his family. All of the daughters were musical as was their brother Charles who attended the Boston Conservatory of Music while Naomi II was sent to Europe to train her voice. These sisters played the piano and sang, giving concerts locally and in New York City, and in other places around the country. At one time they were signed by Barnum and Bailey Circus and while they were performing, Fletcher realized the greater attraction than their voices was their wealth of hair. All seven sisters had hair to the floor. Fletcher saw his opportunity and concocted a harmless "hair restorer" made mostly of water and some herbs which he marketed with the girls' help, [the girls were exploited by their father] realized $90,000 the first year of its sale. It became so desirable a product that they opened offices in Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Havanah, Cuba. Success went to their heads, and they spent lavishly. When women bobbed their hair after World War I, the bottom dropped out of their business, and the remaining sisters died in poverty. Charles had died in 1887 and Fletcher on 6 September 1888. The mother, Mary Brink, and had died in 1867 so she never experienced their prosperity nor the decline.
The Niagara County History Center published a new biography by local writer, Brandon Stickney, entitled The Amazing Seven Sutherland Sisters-A Biography of America's First Celebrity Models on January 1, 2012 (available from amazon.com for $25). This American success story is quickly followed by equally strange tales of mystery and living to excess. All of the twists and turns along the way are the interesting subject of Stickney's biographical narrative of this incredible Cambria family.
Another book published in January 1, 1991 was The Seven Sutherland Sisters by Clarence Lewis (available from amazon.com for $16.27). These rags-to-riches-to-rags mavens were the talk-of-the- town at the turn of the 20th century. In fact, their trademark hair tonic was known far and wide making the seven sisters millionaires at a time the rest of the country was struggling to earn a meager living. They began performing in New York City in the late 1870s at the birth of Broadway, long before the street became one of the world's most well-known entertainment districts. The long-haired sisters started singing in churches and went on to perform at new theaters, playhouses and museums. They drew large crowds and plenty of attention from the press. The Sutherland's Broadway days led them to tour with P.T. Barnum and other famous and influential circus men. This early notoriety certainly went a long way in bringing great public recognition to their hair tonic business, too.

Andrew Sutherland Jr (Andrew3 Peter2 John William1) was born 22 July 1818 in Cambria, Niagara County, New York and died 27 Feb 1891 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. On 7 Aug 1848 he was married to Mary A. McLean in Dundee, Yates County, New York. She was born 16 Mar 1828, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (DeGroot) McLean of Starkey, NY. Mary died in November 1899 in Rochester. They had 7 children. In the 1850 US Census for Yates County NY is William McLean, born New York state, and his wife, Elizabeth, born in New Jersey. William is a farmer worth $17,650. Living with them are: Cornelius F. Mclean age 20; Cyrus F. McLean age 15: Margaret Dye age 31; William McLean Dye age 13; Elizabeth McLean Dye age 10; Nargaret K. Dye age 5; Nary M. Dye age 3; and Eliza F. Dye age 1. Altho it has not been proved, we feel this Margaret Dye is a widow with her children, living with her parents and brothers. Andrew Jr is the one to whom we are indebted for writing a Journal telling of his early life and pioneer times in western New York. He described himself looking as much like his father as any of his siblings, only taller than the 5'8" of his father. He wrote the journal presumably toward the end of his life, possibly after his retirement in 1886. The copy of the journal we have ends in the middle of a sentence indicating that he was either too ill to go on, or that over the years further pages may have been lost. The following is copied from the memorial book of the Genesee Conference in 1891: The Rev. Andrew Sutherland was born in Cambria, Niagara County New York 22 July 1818. He died in Rochester, Monroe County, New York on 27 Feb 1891. He was converted under the ministry of the Rev. Wm. D. Buck, at the age of 19, and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. As a probationer into the Genesee Conference he was received as a Lyons New York in 1846 and into full membership in 1848 at Rochester. The Conference was divided at the session of 1848 and Brother Sutherland became a member of the East Genesee division. He continued to labor...within the territory of the old Genesee Conference...His effective relation was [continuous] until 1886 when, on account of growing infirmities, and especially of gradual failure of sight, made it impossible for him to the study or read. He accepted a superannuated [too old] relation but his residence during the period of his superannuation was still in Rochester where he enjoyed the companionship not only of old friends, but especially of most of the members his own beloved family. He leaves three sons, Willian Andrew and Arthur Eugene, honored and successful members of the legal profession in Rochester, and the Rev. Ward Taylor, pastor of a Congregational church in Meadville, Pa. Two daughters also mourn his loss, Miss Leela M., a teacher in the Deaf-Mute Institution of Rochester, and Miss Anna G. who has always resided with her parents. Physically, Mr. Sutherland was of delicate, apparently frail, oganization; and when he joined the Conference his early demise was expected by his friends, but by a life of severely temperate and correct habits, supported by open-air exercise, such as was demanded of the earlier itinerant, he developed expected powers of endurance, doing much faithful and not little heroic service. He yielded up his life at last in good old age, more on account of exhausted vital resources than of acute disease. His end was cheered by the constant and loving ministries of his own family, for which he expressed great gratitude to God. His end was peace, like the quiet, unclouded setting of the summer Sun. His life work had been so completely done that nothing was left to do in the dying hour.

BYRON SUTHERLAND, son of Andrew and Naomi (Cooley) Sutherland, was born in Cambria, Niagara Co. N.Y., February 4, 1824; his parents were natives of Rutland County, Vt, who removed to Western New York and died in 1836. His father, Andrew Sutherland, was a soldier of the War of 1812, promoted to the Colonelcy of a regiment, and was discharged with honor. His mother, Naomi Cooley (sister of Samuel Cooley b. 1775 and Noah Cooley b. 1782) died at Romeo in 1871. The subject of this sketch removed to Macomb in the year 1849, and located land on Section 10, in Richmond Township, which is the portion of his present farm. He was married, January 1, 1849, to Sarah A., only child of Noah-II Cooley, of Washington Township. She was born in Niagara County N.Y. September 30, 1824. The fruits of this marriage have been Sarah, born November 26, 1849, married H Woodward and lives in Flint; Andrew B., born September 9, 1851, married Lou DeLand and lives. in Memphis Village; Emma A, born January 13, 1854, living with a brother at Romeo; Noah C., born August 13, 1856, married Stella Skillman and lives near Romeo; Anna N., born July 9, 1858, lives at home; William D., born November 19, 1860, lives at home; Elmer B., born June 22, 1862, lives at home; Irving C. and Earnest A. (twins), born March 25, 1865, also at home. Mr. Sutherland has been an officer of the township and is the owner of a well-situated and fertile farm of 250 acres. The father of Mr. Sutherland was born at Rutland, Vt., November 26, 1804; moved to Romeo in 1831 and cleared the homestead farm, where he died April 10, 1877. Her mother was born in Allegany County, N. Y., November 14, 1807, and died at Romeo November 16, 1880; her ancestors took part in the Revolution.

Died at the home of Fred Cook, Garnavillo, on Tuesday, October 28, 1890, Andrew S. Cooley, at the advanced age of [86] years, 3 months and 17 days. Thus another of the pioneers of Clayton county has been called from the scene of his labors, to mingle with the silent majority beyond the tomb. Their labors here are ended, but their memories will be cherished. The best monument that can be erected to them, is this beautiful county, inhabited by the happiest people on earth. With its organization, A.S. Cooley was intimately connected. He was one of the earliest inhabitants and for nearly 60 years, his home was on its soil. Few of us are destined to witness the changes of life that he has witnessed during his long career. This sacred soil which he helped to wrest from the savages has become the home of thousands. He has witnessed the gradual advancement from the rude slow pioneer life, with its manifold trials and dangers, to the rush and rant of our modern civilization, and with the realization of a well spent life, he finds eternal rest among the scenes of his labors. Andrew Sutherland Cooley was born in the Pittsford, Rutland county, Vermont July 11, 1804. When eight years old his parents removed to Niagara county, New York, where he was raised on a farm. March 10, 1825, he married Miss Salome Warren, of Cambria, N.Y., a descendant of Jos. Warren of Revolutionary fame. In 1830 they emigrated west, and located in Franklin, Oakland county, Mich., where they resided until 1834. But that spirit of the typical New Englander, which compels him to seek new scenes, drove him further west. He left his wife and five children in Michigan and sought a new home in Iowa. He landed at Dubuque where he found employment with Dr. McCraney, on a farm. In the spring of 1835 he returned to Michigan by team, intending to bring his family to Dubuque. In the meantime his wife and family, not hearing from him had returned to New York, as they supposed him to have been killed by Indians. He at once started on this tedious journey, found his family and brought them to Dubuque, where they arrived November 20th, 1835. After remaining in Dubuque two years they came in company with Dr. Andros to Clayton county. There was at that time not a town, church or school house in this county. They broke up some prairie and raised a small crop about one mile south of Garnavillo, what is now called the old Beckman farm. In the fall of 1837 they located on the banks of the Turkey river in Millville township. They remained here until 1839 when they again returned to the prairie near Garnavillo and in 1840 took up and improved some government land three miles south of the town. There they made their home until 1872, when the old homestead was sold and another farm purchased in Mendon township near McGregor, which was their home until 1883, since which time they have resided with their daughter, Mrs. Fred Cook.
Of the 17 children born to them 11 survive. His remains were buried at the old cemetery on Thursday. Rev. R. W. Wilcox of Clayton officiated.

The following is from the "Samuel T Cooley Memorial Report", Michigan Historical Commission, v21, p125 and Michigan Pioneer Collection: Samuel Thurman Cooley was born at Pittsford, Rutland Co, Vermont March 30, 1806 The Noah Cooley family including Samuel Thurman Cooley removed to the State of New York shortly after the conclusion of the War of 1812; about 1815. Samuel along with two brothers, Andrew and Caleb came to Oakland County, Territory of Michigan in 1830. Samuel [settled near his brother Andrew in Franklin Township], then removed to Pittsford, Hillsdale County Michigan in 1835, where he resided until July 14, 1890, at which date he removed to Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan, where he resided with his son William Cooley until his death which occured Jan. 4, 1892. Jonesville is about 17 miles northwest of Pittsford. Samuel was married in 1830 to Miss Electa Woodrull of the state of New York who died April 5 1843 at Pittsford Michigan. He was again united in marriage with Mrs. Lydia Carter in 1844, who died Nov 19 1887. Three sons and one daughter survive him by his first marriage, one son by this marriage dying in infancy. Byron Cooley born Jan 28 1834, Woodrull Cooley, born 1836, died in infancy; Rebecca O. Cooley born March 30 1839; William Cooley born April 10 1841, James W. Cooley born March 12 1843. He leaves no children by his second marriage. He was a consistent Christian and a member of the M.E. church his whole life.

(Research):Samuel T Cooley appears in the 1850 and 1854 Michigan censuses, Hillsdale County. Along with his immediate family members there appear Eliza J. Carter, Age 16, born in New York (abt 1834) and Franklin Cooley, Age 25, born in New York (abt 1825). It is probable that Franklin was a brother of Samuel T, son of Noah and Jane. The name Franklin is more likely that the name "Benjamin" which appears in the error prone appendix of Caverly's History of Pittsford.

Farmington Hills is the second largest city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan and a northwestern suburb of Detroit.
The first white settler in what became Farmington Township was a Quaker from Farmington, New York, named Arthur Power. He purchased land in 1823, left, then returned in 1824 with a group of family and associates to clear the land. The settlement became known as Quakertown.
A post office was established Quakertown in January 1826 with the name of Farmington. Shortly, the township of Farmington was organized in 1827. In 1839 a post office named East Farmington was established but it only lasted for three years. In 1847, a post office named North Farmington was established a mile south of the township line as Wolcott's Corners. After the death of postmaster Chauncey D. Walcott in 1865, the office moved to the township line in the northeast quarter of section 4 (near the intersection of 14 Mile Road and Farmington Road).
The settlement incorporated as the village of Farmington in the winter of 1866-67. A fire on October 9, 1872, destroyed many buildings in the center of the village. Farmington incorporated as a city in 1926. Farmington Hills initially was part of the city of Farmington but it incorporated as a seoarate city in 1973.

S. W. Cooley, aged 75 years, 1 month and 13 days, died in this village at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. R. Wilcox, Thursday evening, Dec. 13th, at eleven o'clock. The immediate cause of death was cancer of the mouth, from which malady he had been a sufferer for some time past. The funeral was held at the Methodist parsonage Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. Davies, presiding elder of the M. E. church in this district. The remains were taken to Madison County, Nebraska for burial. Rev. Wilcox accompanied the remains, which went forward from here Sunday evening. Stephen Warren Cooley was born in the state of New York in 1831. When but three years of age he removed with his parents to Dubuque, Iowa, where they resided for a brief time, and then removed to Clayton county, Iowa, where deceased lived during the greater portion of his lifetime. About fifteen years ago Mr. Cooley went to live with his children in the state of Nebraska, and came to Alexandria when his daughter, Mrs. W. R. Wilcox, moved here with her husband one year ago last October. Mr. Cooley was married in 1851 to Mrs. Marie Freeman. Seven children were born to them, three of whom survive. They are Mrs. C. A. Wilcox and Mrs. W. R. Wilcox of this village, and Mrs. R. C. Miles of Madison county, Nebraska, to which place the remains were taken for burial. He is also survived by a brother, who resides upon a farm near West Union, Iowa. Mr. Cooley was a life-long member of the M.E. church. He was a man of firm and unswerving integrity, and one whose Christian faith and character was reflected in every step of his daily life. Although a resident of this county but a short time, those who made his acquaintance appreciated his true worth and all regret the departure of this fine Christian gentleman.

In the 1910 census a curious assemblage has taken place in the Daniel Byron Cooley household. The Noah Cooley household comprising Noah (Norah), 72 (father); Ruth, 63 (mother); William W, 45 (brother), and Hersey, 39, (brother) has reunited with Daniel, his wife Minnie and their five children. William W. and Hersey (Husse) obviously have no children. Otherwise, the enumerator got just about everything wrong. The birth place of Noah is listed as Ohio (was Iowa), Ruth Gladden's birth place is listed as Kentucky (was Wisconsin) and both of their parents also in Ohio and Kentucky respectvely.

Lewis' death information is unknown. He appeared in the 1900 US Census, NE Dry Creek aged 57 along with his wife Etta A aged 37 and Warren (21), Elsie (13), and Alta (6). He does not appear in any 1920 census while his wife Etta as head of household and son Warren are found in the Port Angeles Washington 1920 census.

(Research): There are two Lewis Cooleys listed in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War website (SUVCW website: http://www.suvcwdb.org) (1) Lewis Newman Cooley buried Bloomington WI and a (2) Lewis F Cooley, served in the 14th Iowa Inf, GAR Post 615 bur Oakridge Cem, Cook Co, IL. Neither of these Lewises are our Lewis so it can be concluded that, although he was registered in the Civil War draft, he was not a Civil War Veteran as was his brother Peter S. Cooley.

Peter S Cooley enlisted in the Union Army as a private on 22 Aug 1862 at the age of 19. He was mustered in to Co E, 27th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 29 Aug 1862. He was promoted to full 8th corporal on 20 Nov 1864 and to full 5th corporal on 1 Jul 1865. He mustered out of the same company on 8 Aug 1865 at Clinton, Iowa.
Since Peter was living as an invalid in Garnavillo, Clayton County, Iowa according to the US Census of 1860 and 1870, his brother, Robert Reed, who was caring for him, moved from Garnavillo to McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa between June of 1870 and August of 1873 when Peter died in McGregor.
The following note copied by Viola Kyffin Cooley that accompanied a handstamp now possessed by Daniel Berton Cooley: "Peter S. Cooley 1843-1873; This printing press belonged to Peter S. Cooley, a Civil War veteran, Co. E 27th Iowa Infantry. He died Aug. 15, 1873 from wounds received in action at Murfreesboro, Tennessee". On the underside of the handstamp there is an engraving as follows "Pat'd Nov.14,1871".

Borland, ed This community was grieved last Friday when the word was spread about town that Robert Cooley had passed away on 28 Dec 1917. Mr. Cooley was a man who was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him, and while the writer had known him but two years, still I had learned to love and respect him. His genial disposition and hearty greeting had endeared him to our people and he will be greatly missed in the community. Robert Reed Cooley was born to Andrew Sutherland Cooley and Salome Warren Cooley in Garnavillo, Iowa 14 May 1847 and died at his home near Flagler, Colo., December 28, 1917, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 14 days, death being due to apoplexy [a sudden loss of consciousness resulting when the rupture or occlusion of a blood vessel leads to oxygen lack in the brain]. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church in Flagler on Monday morning, December 31st [1918], at 11 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. W. Moore. His text was found in Phil. 1-21: "To me, to live is Christ, to die is gain." Businesses of Flagler were closed during services. He lived with his parents in Garnavillo [Clayton County, Iowa] until young manhood, when he and his father, A. S. Cooley, disposed of his [?] property near that place and purchased a farm near McGregor, Iowa, where he was in the lumber business several years. He was united in marriage with Stella A. Owen on December 10, 1874 in McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa. To this union were born four children: Twins Herbert Merton (Mert) and Robert Berton (Bert) on 20 Oct 1875 in McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa; Verne Alton on 8 May 1880 in McGregor, and Glenn Syren on 14 Jul 1894 in Plainview, Pierce County, Nebraska. Herbert Merton was drowned in the Missouri River near Yankton, S.D., 4 Nov 1914 and Verne Alton died at McGregor Iowa, 5 Aug 1881, at the age of 15 months. In the spring of 1886 Robert Reed and his family consisting of himself, wife Stella, and twin sons Mert and Bert moved to Plainview, Nebr., where he resided until the spring of 1910 when he migrated to Kit Carson County Colorado where he bought a relinquishment northwest of Flagler. Robert Cooley was a true man; a man who gave almost his entire life to the service of others. For three years he took care of a helpless brother who was wounded in the Civil War [Peter S. Cooley]. This ordeal practically undermined his health, but he never complained. Mr. Cooley is survived by his wife, Stella, and two sons, Robert Berton of Otis, Colo., and Glenn Syren of Flagler. He is also survived by six grand-children, one of whom, Ronald Cooley, has lived with his grandparents since the death of his mother, Elizabeth Holliday Cooley, in December of 1907. A large number of sympathizing friends and associates assembled to pay their last respects to one whom they loved, and the business houses of Flagler were closed during the services. The floral offerings were abundant and beautiful. The last remains were laid to their final rest in the Flagler cemetery. The News joins with the large circle of friend and acquaintances in extending sympathy to the bereaved wife and children in their time of sorrow.

A small newspaper cllipping from the Oelwein Daily Register, Oelwein, Fayette Co, Iowa dated 27 Jul 1946 states that during its Centennial a cane at least 100 years old owned by Andrew S. Cooley father of Mrs. Lee Cook (Clara S. Cooley) was on display in Ritchie's window.
Clara S Cook, wid Fred appears in the Dubuque City Directory of 1911 on page 159. She is a clerk at J.F. Stampfer Co. and resides at 2729 Pine St with her son Lee F Cook (also an entry on p159) and his wife Malinda M. Lee was a conductor on the C.G.W. Line (Chicago, Great Western Railroad) most of his working life.
The Order of Eastern Star of Elkader, Iowa, was organized on the 27th day of February, 1894, and on October 4th, 1894, their charter was granted, with 23 charter members. Among the first officers was Clara Cook.

There are slight possibilities for her existence all the way to 1900 but nothing definitive can be drawn from any of the Ella Cooleys since 1870. One thing is certain: She is NOT Ella Isadore Cooley who died in 1869 as shown in several Ancestry family trees (Dec 2020).

His father's occupation was always farming, at which he is still engaged, in Hillsdale county, Mich.; his mother died in 1846, when Byron was only a small boy, and his father afterward was married to Lydia Carter. The subject of this sketch received his education in the common schools of Hillsdale county, and remained with his father on the farm until 23 years old, when he chose the occupation of railroading, and commenced as teamster on the MS&NIRR [Morenci Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad], and now the LS&MSRR [Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad] and continued to work, first at one thing and then another, until now he has charge of the present office, having continued in the employ of said road from the first until the present. He was married in 1860 to Sarah E. Collins, who was born in New York. Their family consists of 4 children--George, Jennie, Charles and Grace. A Terrible AffairOn Friday morning about six o'clock the log residence, a one story structure, situated three miles south of this city, and owned and occupied by Albert Cooley and family, was discovered on fire by neighbors in the near vicinity. When discovered the house was completely wrapped in flames.
The building was constructed of [illegible] popular, facing to the north. On the south side was an addition or shed-like, in which Mr. Cooley labored during the winter months, making axe-helves and doing odd jobs. The living room was about square, containing two beds, the cook stove, chairs, table, etc. A garret over-head of the main building answered the purpose of a store-room.
The evidence goes to show that Mr. and Mrs. Cooley were up most of the night previous attending a sick child, that Mrs. Cooley and the baby were in bed and that he renewed the fire in the stove, and probably took up the ashes which he placed in the corner of the shed, and when he had started the fire, retired again to bed.
The facts lead to the conclusion that about six o'clock he awoke to find the house on fire and calling his wife ran up into the garret and pitched a trunk out of the window and then returned to help his family out. The front door had been barred and banked up to keep out the cold, and the windows, three in number, were closed in tight, so that there was but one way out, and that through the rear shed. While Mr. Cooley was up stairs his wife doubtless opened the door to the shed and was met with a dense smoke and forks of flames which prostrated her and the baby she carried in her arms.
Mr. Cooley reached the bottom of the stairs and near a window where he was prostrated. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cooley were seen, the former leaning upon the window-sill and the latter apparently between the outer door and the stove, as the dense smoke and flame was lifted by the heavy south-wind from the burning building. The two elder boys were doubtless burned in the bed or near to it.

H.B. Cooley Rites Conducted Tuesday (12 Apr 1966) Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Fidler Funeral Chapel for Hershey (sic) B. Cooley who died Saturday, April 9, at the Dorsett home where he had been a resident for the past two weeks. The Rev. L. Don Veglahn officiated at the services with burial in Rosehill cemetery. Music was furnished by Mrs. Ray Fidler, organist Mr Cooley was born at Clayton, Iowa, Oct 16, 1880, the son of the late N.C. and Elvira Cooley. On Dec. 22, 1905, he was married to Theresa M. Doleshaul at Clairmont, Iowa. The family homesteaded near Kadoka in 1919 and in 1932 moved to Custer. In 1933 they moved to Spearfish where, in later years, Mr. Cooley operated a nursery at 1430 N. Third St. Mrs. Cooley died on May 26, 1951. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ann Cross of Pendleton, Ore, and Mrs. Oma Rothmeyer of Spearfish; four sons, Don Cooley of Belle Fourche, Clyde of Spearfish, Harry of Tillamook, Ore, and Robert of Roseburg, Ore; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs Clara Butler of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Robert Berton Cooley (Bert) and his twin brother, Herbert Merton (Mert), were born 15 Oct 1875 to Robert Reed Cooley (1840-1917) and Stella Alfresine Owen (1850-1920) in McGregor, Iowa "right on the banks of the Mississippi River" as my Grandpa Bert Cooley told me.
The twins grew up in the McGregor area. Some time before 1894[i] the Robert Reed Cooley family consisting of Dad, Mom, Bert, and Mert came to Pierce County, Nebraska, where they settled in Plainview.
Some time before 1896[ii] Samuel Jasper Miller and his wife Mary Ellen Nickerson and his eight children moved from Iowa to Plainview. Amongst the children was Carrie Louella Miller b. 27 May 1883 in Beaman, Iowa, future wife of Robert Berton Cooley.
Bert and Carrie Louella (Lou) were wed 3 Jan 1903 in Plainview. Later in that same year, their first child, Orville Dale was born. Two other children, Carlyle Berton (b. 1905) and Leo (b. 1907), were born in Plainview but did not survive childhood.
At some point before 1906[iii] Mert acquired the Crofton Journal newspaper at Crofton, Knox County, Nebraska. Meanwhile, Bert and his wife, Carrie Louella Miller, had moved to McLean Nebraska where both taught school.
Ronald Delos Cooley was born to Herbert Merton and Elizabeth Holliday in Crofton 28 Jan 1906 and their second child, Merton Beth Cooley, was born 7 Dec 1907. Unfortunately, their mother, Elizabeth Holliday, died shortly after Beth was born. Because of the tragic loss of their mother, Ronald went to live with his grandparents, RR Cooley and Stella Owen in Plainview, Nebraska, and Beth went to live with his uncle RB Cooley in McLean, Nebraska.
In 1910 the Robert Reed Cooley family consisting of RR, Stella, Glenn, and grandchild Ronald Delos, and the Robert Berton Cooley family consisting of RB, wife CL Miller, first child Dale, and nephew Merton Beth, migrated to Kit Carson County Colorado. The RR Cooleys purchased a relinquishment just at the west edge of Flagler and the RB Cooleys purchased 158 acres about four miles west and five miles north of Flagler.
At the same time, the Samuel Jasper Miller family also migrated to Colorado but they landed in Washington County. All of the Miller children, with the exception of eldest son Odes Bert (Carrie Louella, wife of RB Cooley migrated with the Cooleys) came to Colorado and all filed on homesteads in the Anton area of Washington County.
The RB Cooley family "...was on a homestead nine miles northwest of Flagler and we had three years to prove up the claim," said his nephew, Beth Cooley. Bert began in Colorado as a teacher, earning $40 per month at the Huntley school about seven miles due north of Flagler while Lou taught at the Van Patten school at $35 per month. In the summer of 1910 when school was out he joined his Grandpa SJ Miller's threshing crew to run the engine. Since the crops near Flagler had failed in 1910, Grandpa Miller had decided to head north where the crops fared better that year. One day Bert was working about 30 miles north of Flagler near Otis Colo., when he observed the town didn't have a newspaper. That fall Bert began planning for a newspaper in Otis.
"The big reason [for starting a newspaper] was that almost all of the settlers were homesteading, and the law required that anyone who "proved up" on a homestead had to make a publication in a newspaper in the area. These publications were published for a period of six weeks and the homesteader had to pay a publication fee of $5.[iv]
Bert was fortunate enough to find an empty, one and a half story building on the main street (Washington Avenue). It was located on the east side of the street just south of the yard part of the Akron-Otis Lumber Company. The front part was used as a printing office with a rear part partitioned off as a bedroom. At the back of the building was a sort of lean-to about 15 feet square. This was the kitchen and dining area. In order to get to the two bedrooms upstairs, it was necessary to go outside, climb a flight of steps and then walk on two two-by-eight planks laid across the semi-flat roof of the lean-to to get into the upstairs apartment. [Our biggest] concern was water for domestic use. There was no municipal water system and those who lived in town had cisterns which were kept full by a man named Fred Bowen who owned a wooden tank on a wagon. It had a hand pump on it and he would deliver you a supply of water for 50 cents."
"Dad started in the newspaper business from scratch," remembered his son, Coyne Cooley. "He started the Independent on a $250 loan [from his brother-in-law, Odes Bert Miller of Iowa]...that was in 1911, and I was born the next year. We had quarters above the newspaper office, so that's what you call being born into the business." He bought some used equipment and "hired a bum printer to start the paper in Otis just to print legals", said Beth. The first edition (v1#1) of the Otis Independent was published on 5 Jan 1911.[v]
When the Independent was started there were less than 100 people living in Otis. The newspaper consisted of four pages, the front and back was "home print"; that is, the type was set in the shop and printed there. The two inside pages were called "patent" which were supplied by the Western Newspaper Union (out of business by 1982).
During the early years of the newspaper in Otis, the RB Cooley Flagler property was occupied by Lou, Dale, and Beth during the winter months, putting in the time necessary to prove up. Lou taught school, Dale went with her, and Beth was "farmed out" to a neighbor lady (in today's parlance, sent to childcare). Lou and Dale traveled in an open buggy drawn by a single mare who sometimes engaged in the capricious practice known as "balking". That is, a situation where the horse refuses to move when asked to do so. It is very exasperating."
They proved up the [Flagler] claim in March of 1913 and moved to Otis for good.
Tragically, a year later in 1914 Mert was drowned in an automobile accident on the Yankton (SD) pontoon bridge. With the untimely death of his twin brother Bert, sold the OI and he and the family left Otis and moved to Crofton, Nebraska where they continued the operation of Mert's newspaper, the Crofton Journal.
As time went on in that northeast corner of Nebraska near the Missouri River, Bert began to have problems with severe allergies (hay fever). With the climate adversely affecting him he disposed of the Crofton newspaper in 1916 and the family returned to Otis arriving on Election Day, Nov 14, 1916. Bert bought the Independent back and resumed operation of the paper he had founded. Those were the only two years the Cooleys were not involved in a Colorado paper.
"In 1917 we built our new house in Otis and we took the high school principal as a roomer. He was 22 year of age and just out of the University of Denver."[vi] Dale speculates that the principal probably influenced his choice of university as DU from which he graduated.
At some point after their return from Nebraska, the newspaper office was moved "to a make-shift shop adjoining William Whiterhurst's store [on the north]. This had been used as a place to grind and mix feed." At this new location Bert bought a typesetting machine that "was better than doing it by hand, but not much". But a clothing store located in the old grocery store adjoining the Independent office on the south caught fire and was destroyed (no date given). "The Independent was saved by the fact that the north wall of the store [and south wall of the office] was of solid concrete and the fire failed to penetrate."
Not long after that, the chance arose to get a building that had been built out as a drugstore for Justin Hay on the east side of the street across from "the hotel". Shortly, the shop was moved there, the third location for the Otis Independent since RB Cooley started the newspaper.
With the assistance of his wife and sons, he continued to operate the Otis newspaper until 1928 when they traded the paper to J.S. "Stat" Tohill for the Monte Vista Tribune. Tohill came to Otis to operate the Independent but shortly, he sold the newspaper to John W. Graves in 1929. Graves operated it until his death, Feb 22, 1982, and was closely associated with the Cooleys for over 50 years.
Meantime, in Monte Vista, Bert assumed operation of the Tribune but a few months later a better opportunity arose in Akron Colo., county seat of Washington County, whose economy was bustling in the prosperity of the pre-depression years. R.B. sold the Monte Vista Tribune and came to Akron in February of 1929 with his wife Lou, three sons, Dale, Coyne, and Bob, and two nephews, Ronald and Beth.
Akron was a little railroad town and farming community of only a few more than 1200 residents yet it boasted two newspapers, the Akron News and the Akron Reporter. Bert purchased both newspapers which were quickly consolidated resulting in the single newspaper, the Akron News-Reporter the first edition of which was published March 7, 1929. It reported details of a coroner's inquest into death of an Akron man and his son in a train accident, a fire at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Akron, and carried a front page picture of the inauguration of President Calvin Coolidge and Vice President Charles G. Dawes.
Since having five sons working on a small weekly newspaper was overkill, in 1937 Bert purchased the Eastern Colorado Leader in Limon and Dale and Ronald were sent down there to assume operation of the newspaper. Soon they acquired the Genoa Sentinel, the two papers were consolidated, and the Limon Leader was born.
Youngest son, Bob exited the Akron News-Reporter in 1943, went to his wife Eleanor Newcomb's hometown, Mountain Home Idaho, where he started the Mountain Home News. Soon Bob began to feel the ill-effects of arthritis so he moved down to the drier climate of Arizona where he eventually became a Professor of Journalism at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff in 1976.
R.B. and Lou owned the Akron News-Reporter until 1955 when they retired and turned the operation over to Coyne and Beth who formed a partnership shortly thereafter.
In 1972 the Limon Leader was sold and Dale and Ronald went into retirement. When the Akron News-Reporter was sold in 1979 it marked the end of the Cooley family newspaper dynasty "since none of the children was interested in getting into the business", Coyne said. That was mostly true until Jim, son of Ronald, took over the Oxford (Nebraska) News and is still publishing the newspaper in 2013.
After a brief illness, Robert Berton Cooley died in the Washington County Hospital in Akron, Colo. On 12 Dec 1962. He was buried in the Otis Cemetery.
His wife, Carrie Louella Miller died in the Nursing Wing on the south side of Washington County Hospital 10 Aug 1973 and she also was buried in the Otis Cemetery.

TWO IN CAR ESCAPE AND TELL THRILLING STORY OF ACCIDENT O.W. Cass, a druggist of Crotfton Neb, and H.M. Cooley, editor of the Crofton Journal were drowned in the Missouri River at 2 o'clock this morning when Mr. Cass' auto, a Ford, plunged over the side of the pontoon bridge into 12 to 14 feet of water. O.D. Salley, barber, and L.S. Ross, jeweler, also of Crofton, were members of the party but although both experienced the terrible plunge into the river and hit the sandbar at the bottom, both managed to rise clear of the car and get to shore but hardly able to relate how; Salley especially, who was nearly drowned, is in a state of collapse over the loss of his intimate friend, Mr. Cooley.

Cook, 89, a resident of the Masonic Sanitarium for, the last six months and formerly of Oelwein, died in the sanitarium Wednesday evening [23 Jan 1963]. Born in Garnavillo, Iowa, he married the former Malinda Musefeldt in 1900 and she preceded him in death in 1914. In 1920, he married Bessie Meehan, who preceded him in death in 1950. Mr. Cook was a retired railroad conductor. Among his survivors are a son Fred H. Cook, of Oelwein; and a grandson, Marlin Cook, of Davenport. Obituary Service for George W. Cook, 85, ex-purchasing agent of Portland public schools, was Thursday, with entombment following at Riverview Mausoleum. The service was conducted by the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge, which Mr. Cook served as secretary for 35 years. He was born in Garnavillo, Iowa, and came to Oregon in 1907, where he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. Later he was a purchasing agent for the Portland public schools until his retirement. For the last 18 months he has lived at Mr. Tabor Convalescent Hospital, where he died Tuesday. He was a member of the Rose City Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Benjamin F. Schumacher, Corvallis, and a brother, Lee, Oelwein, Iowa. Three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

Orville Dale Cooley was born April 5, 1903 in a small house in Plainview, Nebraska. He started school at McLean, Nebraska primarily because his father, Robert Berton, had a job teaching there. It was the year Halley's Comet was visible (1910) and he went outside each evening to see it. He recalls his mother (Carrie Louella Miller) telling him he would see it again "...but I would be an old man when I did. I did see the comet return in 1986 but I didn't feel nearly as old as my mother said I would!" He went to Colorado with his parents March 1, 1910. They had taken a homestead nine miles northwest of Flagler. They had tried to farm but the weather was bad 1910-1911 so both parents were employed as rural teachers in schools north of Flagler. R.B. taught at the Huntley School and Lou taught at the Patten School. In 1911 Dale's father (R.B. or "Bert") started a newspaper in Otis, Colorado, "The Otis Independent". In 1914 with the untimely death of his father's twin brother, Herbert Merton ("Mert") who ran a newspaper in Crofton, Nebraska, Bert sold the Otis Independent and the family moved to Crofton to continue the running Mert's business. Bert eventually could not tolerate the climate in eastern Nebraska, having severe allergies, so in November 1916 the family repurchased the Otis Independent and once again took up residence in that tiny Washington County town. Dale was employed in his father's newspaper but business "was something less than sensational" so, as eldest child in the family, he worked other jobs around the town. He was a cream tester, a soda jerk in more than one drug store, a harvester (pitching wheat to a threshing machine), and a railroad extra on a gang consisting of two Native Americans, 71 Mexican nationals and an Italian boss. Later he got a job in a clothing store where he "something of the cleaning and pressing business, aside from waiting on trade." With the help of a Methodist minister Dale obtained a scholarship to the University of Denver and started school in the fall semester of 1923. While still attending DU he married Mildred Skinner whose father, L.E. Skinner, operated a general merchandise store in Otis. They had gone to school together but Dale says they were not childhood sweethearts. They were married for almost 68 years. Dale and Mildred had two children, Robert Leonard, born 25 Jan 1933 in Otis, Colorado, and Jill Irene, born 17 Jul 1935 in Akron, Colorado. Dale and his cousin Ronald D. Cooley owned and operated The Limon Leader from 15 Feb 1937 through 1 Jun 1972. Dale was very active in state press affairs. He was a member of the board of directors of the Colorado Press Association for several terms and then served as vice president in 1960 and president of the organization in 1961. Also, he was a life member of the Denver Press Club. He was active in Republican politics serving as county chairman for two terms and as a precinct committeeman and delegate to state conventions numerous times. He was one of the founders of the Lincoln County Colorado Historical Society serving as a co-editor of a county history, "Where the Wagons Rolled". Dale was a member of the AF and AM Masonic Lincoln Lodge #146 in Limon, Colo; a 50-year member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity; a member of Sigma Delta Chi professional journalist fraternity. He was a member of the Limon board of education for two terms during which time it was instrumental in acquiring 15 acres of land upon which school buildings and athletic facilities now stand. Dale was active in the organization of the Limon Chamber of Commerce in 1946 and he was a member of the Limon Town Board for two terms.
On August 5, 1989 Dale and Mildred moved to Riverside, California to be near their son and daughter and other family members who had preceded them to the area.
Dale died 12 May 1994 and his body was returned to Limon to be intered at the Pershing Memorial Cemetery with Masonic graveside services.

There is no burial information about Leo but it stands to reason if both Lyle and Gwen (stillbirth) had gravestones there should be one for Leo somewhere in Antelope County.

(Research):Royal is a village in Antelope County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 63 at the 2010 census. Established in 1890, the history of Royal began at Hering's Mill, located four and one-half miles north of the present town site. In the beginning and for a number of years thereafter, the community was known as Savage. The community was renamed after Royal Thayer, who helped establish the post office.

Robert Miller Cooley was born 20 Sep 1914 in Otis, Washington County, Colorado to Robert Berton Cooley and Carrie Louella Miller. He attended Otis Grade School and Akron High School graduating in 1933.
He entered the University of Colorado (CU) in Boulder beginning in the fall of 1933 and received his baccalaureate degree in June 1937 in journalism.
He met Eleanor Newcomb at CU in 1935 and upon his graduation they were married 1 July 1937 in Melba, Idaho. Shortly after their marriage they returned to Colorado where he began work with the family-owned newspaper in Akron. They lived for one year in an apartment in his parent's home in Akron until mid 1938 whereupon they moved to a house on Railroad Avenue and present-day Date Street (one block east of state highway 63).
Later they bought the Crutchfield house on present-day Custer Street directly west of his brother, Coyne Cooley. In 1943 he joined the war effort but after a brief stint in the United States Army, he was discharged for health reasons and, upon his return home he was requested to take the position of Chief of the Rationing Board in Greeley, Colorado. They rented out the Custer Street home to Nelson and Maude Sears (the parents of Coyne's wife, Margaret Sears Cooley) and moved to Greeley, Colo.
After a short stay in Greeley they moved to Limon, Colo. to help his brother, Dale, publish the Limon Leader. They were there until June 1945 when they moved to Nampa, Idaho. In January 1946 they bought the Mountain Home News in Mountain Home, Idaho.
Because of his worsening arthritic condition (earlier mis-diagnosed as lead poisoning from being around hot-lead Linotype machines) he elected to move to the drier climate of Arizona in 1953. They resided in Tempe in rented quarters from November 1953 to September 1954 while they had a new home built in west Phoenix on Mulberry Drive. During this time he taught journalism and English at Glendale School District while attending Arizona State University where he obtained a Masters Degree in Journalism.
In July of 1963 the family moved to Reedley in the central valley of California where Robert became Director of Public Information at Reedley College. Just a year later in July of 1964 they moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, where he accepted the position of Chairman of the Journalism Department and Director of Public Information at Northern Arizona University.
He retired in 1976 and moved back to Idaho with his wife, Eleanor, where they settled in the relatively new Indian Lake subdivision just south of Boise.
He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi, a society of professional journalists; Phi Delta Kappa, an education fraternity; Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary education fraternity; Kappa Sigma, a social fraternity. While in Mountain Home, Idaho, he was a member of Masonic Lodge #30, A.F. & A.M.
Robert Miller died of a stroke 4 Nov 1992 in Rawlins Wyoming on his way to the funeral of his cousin Merton Beth Cooley (both raised as brothers) who had died on 3 Nov 1992 in Sterling Colorado. One's death close to the death of a sibling or close relative is called the bereavement effect. This effect had already occurred in this family in 1979-1980 when cousins-raised-as-brothers Clifford Coyne Cooley and Ronald Delos Cooley died just 37 days apart, Coyne 5 Dec 1979, Ron 11 Jan 1980.

Ronald Delos Cooley was born in Crofton, Knox County, Nebraska 28 Jan 1906, son of Herbert Merton (Mert) Cooley and Elizabeth Holliday. Late the next year a second child, Merton Beth Cooley, was born (7 Dec 1907) shortly after which Elizabeth died of complications. Ronald went to live with his grandparents Robert Reed Cooley and Beth was taken in and raised by his uncle Robert Berton Cooley and his wife, Carrie Louella Miller. Ronald attended grade school in Crofton, Nebr, and high schools in Flagler, Colo and Otis, Colo. While in Crofton he helped his father, Mert, in his newspaper business then continued to help at his uncle Bert's newspaper, the Otis Independent, in Otis, Colo in 1911. He learned to operate the Linotype at the Independent and with his early immersion in newspapering, Ronald decided to continue in the business. He first attended the University of Denver then the University of Colorado in Boulder Colo where he attained a bachelor's degree in journalism. While at the University, Ronald was a member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity and of Sigma Delta Chi journalistic fraternity where he served as president in his senior year. After graduation he took a newspaper job with Smith-Brooks Printing Company in Denver. In succeeding years he also worked at the Record Stockman, the Denver Post, and one summer, at the Steamboat Springs Pilot. Eventually he returned to Akron, Colo., to work at his Uncle Bert's newspaper, the Akron News-Reporter. In Denver he was married to his high school sweetheart, Irene Skinner, on July 20, 1935. They had two children, Luanne b. 22 May 1940, and a son, James Ronald b. 16 Dec 1943. Luanne was married to Larry Winkelman of Dodge City, Kan., and James married Maria Morrison of Holdrege, Nebr. On February 15, 1937, Ronald and his cousin Dale moved to Limon, Colo., to operate the Eastern Colorado Leader as a partnership set up by Bert. About two years later the paper was combined with the Genoa Sentinal and renamed the Limon Leader. The partnership continued until June 1, 1972, when the newspaper was sold to Norman R. Sunderland and Associates. "During the Eisenhower administration, Ron [was offered] the job of Postmaster at Limon. Before accepting the position Ron lost a lot of sleep while pondering the multitude of details and irritations that would be a part of a postmaster's daily life. 'I got as far as the swearing-in part of it, then decided not to take it', Ron recalled". Ronald served as Mayor of Limon for two terms and as a city councilman for several terms. In 1955, Ronald and Dale, were honored as "Editors of the Year" by the University of Colorado Department of journalism. He was a member of the Colorado Press Association while active in the newspaper business and served on the board of directors, as well as in many different committees. He was a member of the Limon Lions Club of which he was a charter member, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Limon, and an honorary member of the Limon High School "L" Club. Ronald Delos Cooley died January 11, 1980 ae 73. He is buried at Pershing Memorial Cemetery (Limon Cemetery), Limon, Lincoln County, Colorado. Note that Ronald Delos died just 37 days after the death of his cousin Clifford Coyne Cooley (both raised as brothers) who had died on 5 Dec 1979 in Akron Colorado. One's death close to the death of a sibling or close relative is called the bereavement effect. This effect came into play in this family again in 1994 when cousins-raised-as-brothers Robert Miller Cooley and Merton Beth Cooley died just one day apart, Beth 3 Nov 1992, Bob 4 Nov 1992.

Merton Beth Cooley was born to Herbert Merton (Mert) and Elizabeth Holliday Cooley on Dec 7, 1907, in Crofton, Neb. His mother died in 1908 from complications of childbirth. His father was editor and publisher of the Crofton Journal so Beth and his elder brother, Ronald literally grew up in the newspaper business. On 14 Nov 1914, a car in which Herbert Merton was a passenger plunged off the Yankton pontoon bridge over the Missouri River drowning him and another passenger in the car. His body was never recovered. Robert Berton Cooley (a twin brother of Herbert Merton) and his wife Carrie Louella Miller had homesteaded to a farm near Flagler Colorado in 1910 and in 1912 Bert had started the Otis Independent in Otis, Colo., 59 miles north of Flagler. Upon learning of his brother's death, Bert sold the Independent and he and his wife and two sons moved back to Crofton to take over the newspaper. They immediately took in and raised Beth and his elder brother Ronald as members of the family. Beth was still just a small boy at this time but he was already working in the family business. "I could read upside down when I was about four or five, and I was hand-setting type before I went to school. To get the paper out, we were hand-setting type day and night. Us kids never knew anything else." In 1916, because of a worsening allergy condition, Bert sold the Crofton Journal and the family returned to Colorado to resume operation of the Otis Independent, this time with two more "sons" in tow. Beth attended school in Otis, graduating from Otis High School in 1927. He also proved to be a fine football player. In his younger years, Beth played trumpet in a local dance band called "The Night Hawks" and became an excellent performer. After graduation, Beth attended the University of Colorado for a short time, later moving back to Otis to help Bert with the newspaper. Beth married Viola Myfanwy Kyffin on May 25, 1929, in Otis and they had one son, Herbert Merton. His Uncle Bert continued to operate the Independent until the fall of 1928 when, in a trade, he swapped the Otis Independent for ownership in the Monte Vista Tribune, Monte Vista, Colorado. Within a few months, Bert disposed of the Tribune and the family moved to Akron, Colo., where he bought the Akron Semi-Weekly News and the Akron Reporter combining the two papers on February 28, 1929 into the Akron News-Reporter. Its first edition was published on 7 Mar 1929. Beth was an adept Linotype operator and he had a natural bent for mechanics of all kinds. Through the years he became known as one of the best repairmen on all printing machinery and was sought after by other newspapers in northeastern Colorado for repair work. On the retirement of the original owners of the Akron News-Reporter, his Uncle Bert and Aunt Lou, Beth and his cousin, Coyne Cooley, became the sole owners of the Akron News-Reporter, which they continued to operate until 1979. All in all, Beth had worked in the weekly newspaper business almost 68 years: from a four-year-old kid folding newspapers at the Crofton Journal to the sale of the Akron News-Reporter in 1979. In keeping with his interest in mechanics, he had a life-long love affair with the automobile (his favorite, Buick). Beth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Akron Rotary Club. He was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. Merton Beth Cooley died at Sterling Regional MedCenter on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1992 ae 84. Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church in Akron with Rev. Kyle Weir officiating. Interment followed in the Akron Cemetery with Yeamans & Gordon Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Obituary Luanne Mildred Cooley Winkelman, age 81, of Limon, Colorado died in a pedestrian accident Sunday, December 19, 2021. She was born April 22, 1940 in Limon, Colorado, the daughter of Ronald Delos Cooley and Irene Elva Skinner. Her brother, James Ronald Cooley was born three years later. They grew up in Limon, Lincoln County, Colorado, both graduating from Limon High School. She was a part of the Limon Show Choir and played the oboe and twirled in the high school band. She also grew up helping with the newspaper, The Limon Leader, which her dad and uncle (Orville Dale Cooley) ran for many years. On August 23, 1958 she was married to Larry Gene Winkelman. They had three children: Cody Wayne (b. 1960), Joel Ronald (b. 1965), and Larissa Lu (b. 1972). Luanne loved helping on their farm south of Limon and referred to herself as the "gopher" when she cooked meals to take out to workers in the wheat field. She also delighted in gardening, canning, and cooking. Mom loved being part of the community, singing in the Vesper's Choir, helping at the Limon museum, helping at the Methodist Church and she was a member of the Red Hat Society*. She especially enjoyed being a grandma; her grandkids, children of Jim and Larissa Hubbard, are Makinna, age 22; Hauk, age 20; Tuck, age 15; Tate, age 13; and Taylynn, age 8. She was always following them around for their sports, which included watching football, volleyball, track, and baseball. She loved going to their music and band concerts, also. She is survived by her two sons, Cody Winkelman of Limon, Colorado and Joel Winkelman of Limon Colorado. Her daughter, Larissa Hubbard (Jim) and grandchildren, Makinna, Hauk, Tuck, Tate, and Taylynn of Limon, Colorado. Her brother, Jim Cooley of Oxford, Nebraska and his two sons, Chris Cooley (Jess) of Waverly. Nebraska and their four children. Robert (Elizabeth) of Kearney, Nebraska and their four children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Irene, and her sister-in-law, Maria Helen Morrison Cooley, wife of James Ronald. Services in care of Love Funeral Home Limon, Colorado. *The Red Hat Society (RHS) is an international social organization that was founded in 1998 in the United States for women age 50 and beyond, but now open to women of all ages. In the fall of 1997, Sue Ellen Cooper, an artist from Fullerton, California, bought a red hat and gave it to a friend as a birthday gift. She was inspired by the Jenny Joseph poem, "Warning", that was popularized by a Reader's Digest article written by Liz Carpenter in which a poem begins: "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me...". (Research):Fatal accident occurs at Limon's Parade of Lights

What was meant to be a joyous holiday event was turned into tragedy as a fatal vehicle-pedestrian accident took place in Limon as its annual Parade of Lights was about to begin last Saturday evening, Dec. 18. The accident took place at the downtown area's main intersection of Main Street and E Avenue about 6 p.m. According to an accident investigation by the Colorado State Patrol, a 2018 Ford Focus was headed eastbound on Main Street as it approached the intersection which has a stoplight. "The Ford slowed down for a red light as it approached E Avenue", Trooper Josh Lewis said. The two pedestrians were walking south across Main Street as the light changed to green. Before they had finished crossing the street they were both struck by the car. The pedestrians were Luanne Winkelman, 81, and her 56-year-old son, Joel both of Limon. Immediately following the accident, they were rushed by ambulance to Lincoln Community Hospital in Hugo. "Due to the seriousness of her injuries, the 81-year-old female was later flown by AirLife helicopter to Swedish Hospital in Denver," Trooper Lewis said. "In the early morning hours of December 19 she was declared deceased." Joel Winkelman suffered "moderate injuries" in the accident. He was later released from the hospital in Hugo. The driver of the Ford Focus was 40-year-old Michael Jantz of Limon. He was not injured in the accident. The Colorado State Patrol is in charge of this case. "This is still an open case and the investigation is continuing." Trooper Lewis said. "Alcohol is considered a possible factor. Charges may be pending". Saturday's accident occurred just as the annual Parade of Lights was about to begin. Floats and other vehicles were lined up on E Avenue in preparation to crossing Main Street into Limon's small downtown area where hundreds of spectators were gathered to watch the parade. The Limon Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Parade of Lights which celebrates the Christmas season. Following this tragic incident, the organizers of the parade immediately canceled the event for this year.

Driver arrested in fatal pedestrian-vehicle accident

Ed: condensed from original story Michael C. Jantz, 40, of Limon was arrested last Thursday, Dec 23, for driving the vechile that struck down two pedestrians on the town's Main Street on Dec 18. As of Monday, Dec 27, Janz was still in custody at the Lincoln County Jail in Hugo. The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) handled the investigation and brought the arrest charges. The four arrest charges are: (1) Vehicular homicide, DUI (Class 3 felony); (2) Careless driving resulting in death (Class 1 traffic offense); (3) Careless driving resulting in injury (Class 2 traffic offense); and (4) Leaving the scene/accident involving death (Class 3 felony).
