Seaforth is 30 minutes west of Stratford and just about an hour out of both Kitchener-Waterloo and London. Although there were settlers in the area already, the town really got its start with the coming of the railway in 1858. By the 1870's Seaforth was a major terminal for grain shipment, food processing, manufacturing, retailing and exchange. It was a thriving commercial center of more than 3000 people. Kitchener (then Berlin) was just slightly larger. The town was officially incorporated in 1874 and although a devastating fire in 1876, burned many of the original buildings downtown, a modern commercial centre sprang from the ashes almost immediately. Many of the fine commercial buildings in Seaforth were constructed in one great building boom that began in 1877.
